Apistogramma cacatuoides (Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid)
Scientific Name: Apistogramma cacatuoides
Maximum Length: About 2.5–3 inches
Favorite Things: Soft, slightly acidic water; leaf litter; caves; and densely planted tanks. These dwarf cichlids love structure—coconut huts, rock caves, driftwood, and shaded areas all help them feel secure. Feed a mix of high-quality pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and live foods for best color.
Best Buddies: Peaceful for a cichlid. Excellent with tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and peaceful dwarf gouramis. Avoid aggressive species or large fish that may intimidate or outcompete them.
Notes on Sexing:
• Males: Brighter colors, longer fins, dramatic orange “cockatoo” extensions.
• Females: Smaller, yellow tones, especially when guarding eggs.
