Chocolate Cichlid (Hypselecara temporalis)

The Chocolate Cichlid is a peaceful, intelligent South American cichlid known for its rich brown coloration and calm temperament. Juveniles often display lighter tan or striped patterns, while adults develop the deep “chocolate” tones that give the fish its name. Compared to many large cichlids, Chocolate Cichlids are relatively gentle and can be kept with other similarly sized community fish.

They are very interactive fish and quickly learn to recognize their owner, often coming to the front of the aquarium during feeding time. Their curious personality and impressive size make them a favorite centerpiece fish for larger freshwater aquariums.

Chocolate Cichlids appreciate warm, stable water conditions with driftwood, rocks, and open swimming space. They do best in aquariums with good filtration and plenty of hiding spots. A varied diet of quality pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live foods will help maintain their health and coloration.
