The Curly-Que Pistol Shrimp is a fascinating and entertaining reef-safe invertebrate known for its distinctive curled antennae and signature snapping claw. This shrimp produces an audible “pop” used for communication and defense, making it one of the most interesting cleanup crew members you can add to a marine aquarium.

These shrimp spend much of their time burrowing and rearranging sand and rubble, helping to aerate the substrate. They do best in aquariums with sand beds and rockwork where they can establish a secure burrow. Curly-Que Pistol Shrimp are generally reef safe but may become territorial toward other shrimp of similar size.

In peaceful reef systems, they can coexist well with small fish and invertebrates. Some individuals may form symbiotic relationships with compatible goby species, though this is not guaranteed.
