Dwarf Orange Mexican Lobster
Scientific Name: Cambarellus patzcuarensis “Orange” (CPO)
Origin: Mexico
Adult Size: ~1.5–2"
Temperament: Semi-peaceful
Care Level: Easy
The Dwarf Orange Mexican Lobster, commonly known as the CPO Crayfish, is a vibrant freshwater invertebrate prized for its bright orange coloration and manageable size. Unlike larger crayfish species, CPOs are well suited for community aquariums when housed with compatible tank mates.
These crayfish spend much of their time exploring the substrate, climbing décor, and scavenging for food. They appreciate aquariums with plenty of hiding places such as caves, driftwood, rockwork, and plants. While generally peaceful, they may become territorial with other bottom dwellers or smaller invertebrates, especially in tight spaces.
CPOs are hardy and adaptable, making them a great option for hobbyists looking to add movement and color to a freshwater tank without the risks associated with full-size crayfish.
Tank Recommendations:
• Minimum tank size: 10 gallons
• Multiple hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior
Diet:
• Omnivore
• Sinking pellets, algae wafers
• Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)
• Occasional protein (bloodworms, shrimp pellets)
Compatibility Notes:
• Generally safe with fast-moving fish
• Use caution with small fish, shrimp, or snails
• Best kept singly unless tank size allows space and cover
