The Endlicheri Bichir is an impressive prehistoric-looking freshwater fish recognized by its elongated body, bold saddle-shaped markings, and distinctive row of dorsal finlets. This fascinating species belongs to an ancient lineage of African fishes and makes a striking addition to large freshwater predator aquariums.
Our tank-raised Endlicheri Bichirs are well suited for experienced aquarists looking for an unusual bottom-dwelling predator. They spend much of their time exploring the substrate and resting beneath driftwood or rockwork, becoming especially active during feeding and lower-light periods.
Endlicheri Bichirs possess a specialized air-breathing organ that allows them to gulp atmospheric air. They must always have unobstructed access to the water surface.
Aquarium Requirements:
-
Very large aquarium with substantial bottom space as the fish matures
-
Adult housing of approximately 200 gallons or larger, depending on dimensions
-
Soft sand or smooth substrate
-
Driftwood, caves, and shaded hiding places
-
Strong filtration and stable water quality
-
Secure, tightly fitted aquarium lid with no escape gaps
-
Unobstructed access to atmospheric air
Diet: Sinking carnivore pellets, frozen shrimp, chopped fish, earthworms, and other appropriately sized meaty foods. Train juveniles to accept quality prepared foods for balanced nutrition.
Compatibility: Best kept with appropriately sized fish that cannot fit into its mouth. Small fish and shrimp may be eaten. Avoid aggressive tankmates that may injure the bichir.
Important: Endlicheri Bichirs grow extremely large and are not suitable for ordinary community aquariums. Their long-term aquarium requirements should be considered before purchase.
