The Gumdrop Spotted Croucher (Caracanthus madagascariensis or Caracanthus maculatus), often called the Gumdrop Coral Croucher or velvetfish, is a tiny, highly unique marine fish closely related to lionfish and scorpionfish, despite its goby-like appearance. Growing to a maximum size of only 1.5 to 2 inches, they feature a compact, laterally compressed pale body covered in vibrant red or brown spots and tiny hair-like appendages that give them a distinct fuzzy or velvety texture.
