  • IceCap 200 GPD 4-Stage RO/DI Water Filtration System

The IceCap 200 GPD RO/DI System is a high-output four-stage reverse osmosis and deionization system designed to produce high-purity water for freshwater, saltwater, and reef aquariums. Its dual-membrane design provides up to 200 gallons per day of purified water production, making it an excellent choice for larger aquariums, multiple-tank systems, frequent water changes, and high-demand saltwater mixing stations.

Unlike a conventional single-membrane RO/DI system, the IceCap 200 GPD utilizes two 100 GPD Dow FilmTec RO membranes. This configuration increases purified-water production while making more efficient use of the wastewater produced by the first membrane.

    Four-Stage Filtration

    Stage 1 – 5 Micron Sediment Filter
The polypropylene sediment pre-filter removes suspended particles such as dirt, rust, sand, and other debris from the incoming water. This protects the carbon filter and RO membranes from premature fouling and helps maintain consistent system performance.

    Stage 2 – 5 Micron Carbon Block
The carbon block reduces chlorine, organic contaminants, and other compounds that can damage RO membranes. Proper carbon filtration is especially important for protecting the two Dow FilmTec membranes and maintaining their rejection performance.

Stage 3 – Dual 100 GPD Dow FilmTec RO Membranes
Two Dow FilmTec TW30-1812-100HP membranes provide the primary purification stage and give the system its rated production capacity of up to 200 gallons per day.

The RO membranes typically reject approximately 96–98% of dissolved salts under specified operating conditions, dramatically reducing dissolved solids before the water reaches the DI stage.

The dual-membrane configuration also makes more efficient use of source water than simply operating two independent RO systems. Wastewater from the first membrane is utilized by the second membrane, increasing total purified-water production while reducing the amount of wastewater produced relative to the amount of purified water collected.

Stage 4 – Refillable Deionization Cartridge
After passing through the RO membranes, the water is polished through a refillable DI cartridge containing high-capacity color-changing mixed-bed deionization resin.

The DI stage removes the remaining dissolved ions that pass through the RO membranes, producing extremely low-TDS water suitable for demanding reef and aquarium applications.

The cartridge can be opened and refilled with replacement DI resin rather than requiring replacement of the entire cartridge.

    High-Output 200 GPD Production

With up to 200 gallons per day of rated production, this system is particularly well suited for aquarium keepers who regularly need large quantities of purified water.

The additional capacity can significantly reduce the time required to fill large storage containers compared with conventional 75 or 100 GPD RO/DI systems.

The 200 GPD system is an excellent choice for:

    • Large reef aquariums
    • Large freshwater aquariums
    • Multiple-aquarium systems
    • Fish rooms
    • Saltwater mixing stations
    • Large automatic top-off reservoirs
    • Frequent or large-volume water changes
    • Aquarium maintenance applications

    Water-Saving Dual-Membrane Design

One of the primary advantages of the IceCap 200 GPD system is its dual-membrane water-saving configuration.

Instead of simply sending the concentrate from the first RO membrane directly to the drain, the system routes it through the second membrane. This allows additional purified water to be recovered from the incoming water supply.

Under proper operating conditions, the system can provide approximately a 1:1.5 purified-water-to-wastewater ratio, making it considerably more water efficient than many conventional single-membrane RO systems.

Actual water efficiency will vary with source-water pressure, temperature, TDS, membrane condition, and other operating conditions.

    Built-In Pressure Gauge

A glycerin-filled pressure gauge provides an easy way to monitor feed pressure and overall system performance.

Water pressure is particularly important with the 200 GPD dual-membrane configuration. IceCap recommends approximately 65–80 PSI for the 150 and 200 GPD systems.

Insufficient pressure can reduce purified-water production, increase wastewater, and decrease overall system efficiency. Homes or businesses with lower water pressure may require an RO booster pump.

    Manual Membrane Flush Valve

The system incorporates a manual membrane flush/flow restrictor that allows increased water flow across the RO membranes.

Periodically flushing the membranes helps remove accumulated deposits from the membrane surface and can help maintain performance and extend membrane service life.

    Color-Changing Refillable DI Resin

The final DI stage uses high-capacity color-indicating mixed-bed DI resin. The IceCap resin changes from blue to amber/brown as it becomes exhausted, providing a convenient visual indication that replacement may be approaching.

Because color change should not be the only indication of water quality, monitoring final product water with a TDS meter is recommended.

    Standard Replacement Components

The IceCap system uses standard 10-inch filter canisters and cartridges along with standard 1/4-inch RO tubing and push-connect fittings.

This simplifies routine maintenance and provides flexibility when replacing sediment filters, carbon blocks, DI media, tubing, and fittings.

    No Electricity Required

The standard IceCap 200 GPD RO/DI system operates entirely from household water pressure and does not require electrical power.

Because the dual-membrane system performs best at higher pressures, a booster pump may be added when source-water pressure is below the recommended operating range.

    Important Water Pressure Considerations

The 200 GPD system requires more feed pressure than IceCap's lower-output systems. Approximately 65 PSI or greater is recommended for proper dual-membrane operation, with 65–80 PSI being the preferred operating range.

If source pressure is too low, actual production may be substantially lower than 200 GPD and the system may produce excessive wastewater. An RO booster pump is recommended when adequate pressure cannot be maintained.

The 200 GPD rating represents production under specified membrane test conditions. Actual production varies with water pressure, water temperature, source-water TDS, membrane condition, and pre-filter condition.

    Important Chloramine Note

If your municipal water supply uses chloramines rather than chlorine, IceCap recommends using a higher-density carbon block specifically capable of chloramine removal. Standard carbon filtration should not automatically be assumed to provide adequate chloramine protection.

Proper chloramine filtration is especially important because inadequate carbon treatment can shorten RO membrane life.

    Maintenance

Sediment and carbon pre-filters should be replaced periodically based on source-water quality and usage. Restricted or exhausted pre-filters can reduce pressure reaching the RO membranes and negatively affect both production and rejection performance.

The DI resin should be replaced when exhausted. Monitoring the final product water with a TDS meter provides the most reliable indication of DI performance.

RO membranes can provide several years of service when operated under proper conditions and protected by regularly maintained sediment and carbon pre-filtration.

Periodically flushing the membranes and maintaining adequate feed pressure will help maximize system performance and membrane service life.

The IceCap 200 GPD RO/DI System is an excellent choice for aquarists who need high-volume purified-water production while also wanting better water efficiency than a traditional single-membrane RO/DI system.
