Red Sea Salt Mix – 200 Gallon Bag
Red Sea Salt is a premium marine salt mix formulated to closely replicate the balanced chemistry of natural tropical seawater while providing slightly elevated foundation elements for use in closed aquarium systems. Its balanced levels of calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, potassium, and trace elements make it an excellent choice for marine fish systems, mixed reefs, and low-nutrient reef aquariums.
Unlike Red Sea Coral Pro Salt, which is formulated with substantially elevated alkalinity and calcium, standard Red Sea Salt maintains parameters much closer to natural seawater. This makes it particularly well suited for established reef systems where the aquarist prefers to maintain calcium and alkalinity through a dedicated dosing system rather than introducing large parameter changes during water changes.
Balanced Natural Seawater Parameters
When mixed to approximately 35.5 ppt, Red Sea Salt provides:
- Alkalinity: 7.7–8.2 dKH
- Calcium: 415–445 ppm
- Magnesium: 1,240–1,320 ppm
- Potassium: 375–405 ppm
- pH: Approximately 8.2–8.5
These balanced parameters provide a stable foundation for maintaining marine fish, invertebrates, and corals while closely matching the chemistry commonly maintained in natural-seawater-style reef systems.
Ideal for Reef Aquariums
Red Sea Salt provides biologically balanced levels of the primary foundation elements required by corals: calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonates.
Maintaining these elements in the proper relationship supports stable seawater chemistry and provides the minerals required for formation of aragonite coral skeletons.
Its moderate alkalinity makes Red Sea Salt especially useful for aquariums where maintaining stability is preferred over the elevated parameters found in high-alkalinity reef salt mixes.
Excellent for Dosed Reef Systems
Red Sea Salt is an excellent choice for reef aquariums using:
- Two-part calcium and alkalinity dosing
- All-in-one reef supplements
- Calcium reactors
- Automated dosing systems
- Low-nutrient reef systems
- Individually controlled foundation-element supplementation
Because the freshly mixed alkalinity is close to the level maintained by many modern reef aquariums, routine water changes are less likely to cause large alkalinity swings.
Suitable for Fish-Only Systems
Red Sea Salt can also be mixed at a lower salinity for marine fish systems.
Red Sea provides different target concentrations depending on the intended aquarium:
Marine Fish – 31 ppt
- Alkalinity: 6.8–7.3 dKH
- Calcium: 365–395 ppm
- Magnesium: 1,100–1,180 ppm
Marine Invertebrates – 33.5 ppt
- Alkalinity: 7.3–7.8 dKH
- Calcium: 390–420 ppm
- Magnesium: 1,170–1,230 ppm
Reef / Coral Aquariums – 35.5 ppt
- Alkalinity: 7.7–8.2 dKH
- Calcium: 415–445 ppm
- Magnesium: 1,240–1,320 ppm
This allows the same salt mix to be used across a wide variety of marine aquarium applications simply by adjusting the final salinity.
Complete Trace Element Profile
Red Sea Salt contains a complete complement of trace elements naturally associated with seawater.
The formula is designed to maintain the appropriate relationship between major, minor, and trace elements rather than simply increasing calcium and alkalinity independently.
Clean Formula
Red Sea Salt is produced without chemical binders and is formulated without added nitrate or phosphate.
The salt also features a low moisture content, helping maintain consistency and reducing clumping when properly stored.

Red Sea Salt vs. Coral Pro Salt
Red Sea Salt is the lower-alkalinity formula and is designed to provide parameters closer to natural seawater.
It is an excellent choice for established reef aquariums where calcium, alkalinity, and other elements are maintained through regular supplementation.
Red Sea Coral Pro Salt provides substantially higher calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity and is designed for aquariums where accelerated coral growth and elevated foundation-element concentrations are desired.
For reef keepers maintaining alkalinity around 8 dKH, standard Red Sea Salt is generally the more appropriate choice.
Mixing
Always mix Red Sea Salt with purified RO or RO/DI water.
Add the salt gradually to circulating water until the desired salinity is reached. Measure final salinity with a properly calibrated refractometer or other reliable salinity instrument before adding the new seawater to the aquarium.
The amount of salt required depends on the desired final salinity. Red Sea specifies approximately 38.2 grams per liter when targeting reef conditions around 35.5 ppt.
